DIY Indian Clubs
Just days before the lockdown started, I developed a shoulder twinge and then a jolly sharp pain when I performed shoulder height movements. I self-diagnosed a rotator cuff niggle and decided that a more holistic shoulder routine was called for. Something more holistic than back to back bench presses, day after day.
With the opportunity of a new gadget on my mind, I thought that swinging Indian Clubs sounded like a great routine for increasing shoulder strength and mobility.
I actually already have a single club in the back garden gym but that purchase was fuelled by ego and I foolishly bought a 5kg clubbell – not at all ideal for someone with a shoulder complaint.

I had a look at Indian Clubs on Amazon and was horrified by the price. As anyone tempted in the last few weeks to build an at home gym will know, exercise equipment has skyrocketed in price – seems to be a viral side effect.
I’m not paying £50+ for a pair of 3 lb clubs but my shoulder still needs a routine so here’s my solution – raid the drinks cupboard!
How to build a Pair of DIY Indian Clubs from Tonic Water Bottles
If you’ve responded to this pandemic anything like me, you are likely to have a glut of tonic bottles flowing over in your recycling bin – go grab two right now!
Using a pandemic fuelled alcohol binge to create a pair of DIY Indian Clubs……
Ingredients for DIY Indian Clubs
While you’re at it, have a hunt round the garden for a couple of rounded pebbles, or golf balls, or nail varnish bottles – or anything larger than the top of your bottle.
Come back with these items, tape and a pair of scissors or sharp teeth.
DIY Indian Clubs from Tonic Water
- Fill the bottles to the brim with water. If you have sand to hand you can use that and it will increase the weight of each club from 1.2 kg to 1.7 kg
- Tape the rounded object to the top end using 4 strips of tape and another bit to go around the neck to hold it in place
- If you prefer not to look like an old soak when exercising, you can continue the taping down the whole body of the bottle
Job done. Go forth and learn how to swing clubs
